Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model routing marketplace, for more than $8 billion in cash and stock, making this one of the largest AI infrastructure acquisitions to date.

What's the Scoop?

  • What OpenRouter does: It's a neutral routing layer that gives developers one OpenAI-compatible API to reach +400 models across dozens of providers, with automatic failover and per-token pricing, taking roughly a 5% cut of inference spend. It claims 8-10 million developers and tens of trillions of tokens routed weekly.
  • The numbers: OpenRouter has raised $164 million total, most recently a May round at a $1.3 billion valuation backed by CapitalG, a16z, Menlo Ventures, and others. Stripe's offer values it at more than 5x that just three months later.
  • Not a cold acquisition: OpenRouter has run its billing on Stripe since January, using it for global payments, invoicing, tax, and fraud tooling. This deal fuses that existing payment rail directly to the layer deciding which model gets used and at what price.
  • The crypto trail: OpenRouter's CEO, Alex Atallah, co-founded OpenSea and ran it as CTO through its breakout NFT years. He's called OpenRouter "the equivalent of Stripe for AI," and this new deal makes that literal. Meanwhile, Stripe already operates Tempo, the stablecoin-focused blockchain launched in March, alongside the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard letting AI agents autonomously make payments. Owning OpenRouter plugs a massive share of the world's model traffic directly into that stack.
