ANALYSIS
Inside Uniswap's Land Grab on Robinhood Chain
Bankless Author: David Christopher

Uniswap Uniswap has spent years honing its infrastructure to become Ethereum’s core liquidity layer. Robinhood Chain is now giving it a chance to show what that infrastructure can do under pressure.

Uniswap arrived as the chain’s primary public AMM from day one. Since then, more than 340,000 tokens have launched into its pools through Robinhood Chain launchpads, generating $3.6 billion in launchpad trading volume. Across all activity, Uniswap has facilitated roughly $12.8 billion on the chain over the past month, making Robinhood Chain its second-largest market behind Ethereum.

According to Galaxy, roughly four-fifths of Robinhood Chain’s DEX volume has come from memecoins. That may make the activity easy to discredit, but it also gives Uniswap a high-volume environment in which to prove the strength of its infrastructure while facilitating crypto’s most popular activity: speculation.

Hooks Shine

While Uniswap has provided the pools, liquidity, and execution that make this speculation possible, it generally has not controlled the launches themselves.

Instead, independent launchpads have built their own issuance systems on top of Uniswap, including markets that pair memecoins directly against Robinhood Stock Tokens.

The pattern has also given one of Uniswap v4’s defining features, hooks, a chance to move from theory into practice.

Hooks are optional smart contracts attached to a v4 pool. Put simply, they let builders program extra rules into a market that can run whenever someone trades or changes its liquidity. Those rules can adjust fees, distribute rewards, trigger buybacks, control how a launch unfolds, or connect the pool to a larger application, all without rebuilding Uniswap underneath.

Fake World Assets offers a recent example outside Robinhood Chain.

A Beginner’s Guide to Fake World Assets on Bankless
Fake World Assets is Ethereum’s breakout NFT gacha. Here’s how it works, how to play, and what to watch out for going forward.

As my colleague William Peaster covered last week, the project uses a v4 hook to turn a Uniswap pool into an onchain NFT gacha game: users deposit ETH-backed NFTs, others pay for randomized pulls, and the system connects payouts, depositor fees, token rewards, and planned buybacks. Its recent traction has made the appeal of hooks easier to see.

Robinhood Chain’s launchpads are putting the same flexibility to work, or preparing to, in different ways:

  • Bankr: Hooks split the fees from each trade among the token creator, permanently locked liquidity, the Bankr protocol, BNKR buybacks, and Doppler. In effect, every trade produces creator revenue, deepens the token’s liquidity, and funds buybacks.
  • Pons: Its v2 hook will set who receives trading fees and what asset they are paid in, manage buybacks, and let active communities "inherit" the fee rights of abandoned projects.

Overall, builders are treating Uniswap as a base layer and customizing the markets above it, while Robinhood Chain gives those designs somewhere to operate at scale.

It has superb distribution, a speculative userbase, a growing universe of assets, and Uniswap installed as its primary public AMM. The launchpads may rise and fall, but Uniswap benefits if each new application builds on the same underlying liquidity system.

As Solana Solana and EVM chains compete to become the place where users trade everything, the near-infinite design space of hooks gives Uniswap a way to potentially support more distinctive speculative products: markets that combine launches, trading, games, buybacks, and other app-like mechanics.

That may be the edge the EVM needs to pull ahead.

Uniswap Moves Up the Stack

Yesterday, Uniswap released the Launches tab in its Web App to support this activity directly. Launches pulls tokens from Bankr, Pons, Long, and other launchpads into a single feed, helping users discover and trade them without leaving the Uniswap interface.

One omission is particularly interesting. Uniswap’s Continuous Clearing Auctions have been live on Robinhood Chain since July 13th, giving teams a native way to sell tokens, discover a market price, and seed liquidity into v4. Yet CCA launches are not surfaced as their own category or launchpad within the new Launches page.

Instead, a banner at the top of the page points to something called Pools.trade, marked “something new, coming soon.”

If Pools.trade becomes a more native Uniswap launchpad (which is likely certain), it could bring together the pieces Uniswap already has: its own launch and price-discovery mechanisms, the v4 pools underneath them, the Launches feed for distribution, and the Uniswap interface for trading. CCA could be one option within that system rather than the entire product, alongside more direct ways to launch immediately into a pool.

That would move Uniswap beyond being simply a liquidity backbone, fleshing it out to participate in every layer of the process: from launching a token and establishing its market to surfacing it and collecting fees from the resulting trading.

Robinhood Chain’s activity, alongside the surge in hook experimentation, is proving that Uniswap, and the EVM overall, can sit beneath a large speculative economy. The remaining question is how much of the launch stack Uniswap ultimately intends to own, and if they can make it last. I, for one, am optimistic.
