Launched by Casey Rodarmor — (who also created Runes) — in Jan 2023, Ordinals is a protocol that converts individual satoshis (the smallest bitcoin denomination) into NFTs.
Its importance comes from enabling the minting of totally onchain NFTs directly to Bitcoin, meaning the metadata of an NFT can be indefinitely retrievable from the Bitcoin blockchain.
This innovation challenges preconceived notions of what can be achieved on Bitcoin, extending its utility beyond simple monetary transactions.
