The Zcash Zcash Open Development Lab is steering a coordinated network upgrade to patch a flaw in Orchard, the chain's newest shielded pool, after flagging the issue over the weekend during a security review.

What's the Scoop?

  • The Bug: A problem with Orchard transaction mining turned up through routine auditing. Fortunately, it seems the flaw hasn't been exploited, but a fix required a protocol-level patch that temporarily froze users' ability to send or receive Orchard funds. Transparent and shielded Sapling transactions remained unaffected.
  • Timeline Slips: Orchard mining was first slated to return by 14:00 EDT today, June 2nd, but several mining pools asked for extra runway to finish deployment and quality checks across time zones. The ZODL team now expects miners to resume accepting Orchard transactions around 23:00 EDT.
  • No Worries: Traders certainly shrugged the hiccup off, as the ZEC price surged more than 14% this morning to above $620.
