According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, cryptocurrency-focused venture fund Paradigm Paradigm is raising a new fund that will allow it target more opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

What's the Scoop?

  • Fresh Fund: Over the weekend, The Wall Street Journal reported that Paradigm is seeking to raise $1.5B for a new fund that would broaden its investment mandate to include "frontier technology" industries beyond crypto, such as artificial intelligence and robotics. People familiar with the situation say Paradigm's managers, "decided they no longer wanted to be restricted in ways that could force them to pass on attractive deals."
  • Prior Pivot: In May 2023 – just five months after the launch of ChatGPT – Paradigm first announced it would broaden its investment focus beyond crypto to include other frontier technologies (namely artificial intelligence), a decision which was at that time ridiculed within the crypto industry.
  • Overlapping Focus: Paraphrasing one anonymous WSJ source, there is a large overlap between crypto markets and AI, especially in the burgeoning agentic payments sector.
