Dear Bankless Nation,

It's no secret that generative AI has become the tech topic of 2023. A huge part of this forward progression has been the work put out by OpenAI with ChatGPT.

Today, we take a closer look at the plugin ecosystem around ChatGPT Plus and showcase how Bankless readers can leverage them to level-up their analyst skills.

ChatGPT Plugins to Step Up Your Crypto Analysis

Bankless Writer: William Peaster | disclosures

ChatGPT is an AI service that shows remarkable intelligence across a range of fields. “Plugins” are new third-party resources that enhance ChatGPT’s capabilities, and crypto-centric plugins are beginning to become popular. For today’s post, let’s get you up to speed on how to get started with ChatGPT crypto plugins!

  • Goal: Enhance your crypto analysis with AI
  • Skill: Easy
  • Effort: 30 minutes
  • ROI: Leveling up your crypto analytics game

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) “chatbot.”

In more technical terms, it’s a neural network-based language model. It’s been trained on a huge trove of text data and can create human-like answers based on text inputs it receives.

While it’s important to keep in mind that ChatGPT is still experimental and in a continuous process of being further developed, it’s already proven very capable as an AI assistant in all sorts of activities, like writing code, translating documents, organizing research, and beyond.

Note too, though, that ChatGPT has some key limitations. Sometimes it produces seemingly plausible but actually incorrect answers, dubbed “hallucinations,” and it’s pretty sensitive to input tweaks, meaning subtly rephrasing your questions to it can lead to better answers!

A quick history of ChatGPT

  • ChatGPT announcement — In Nov. 2022, OpenAI first unveiled ChatGPT.
  • ChatGPT Plus launch — In Feb. 2023, OpenAI introduced a subscription plan, ChatGPT Plus, granting subs faster chatbot response times and priority access to new features and improvements for $20 a month.
  • GPT-4 released — In March 2023, OpenAI announced GPT-4, the next highly performant iteration in its signature language model series, and began rolling the model out as an option to ChatGPT Plus users.
  • ChatGPT plugins introduced — In March 2023, OpenAI also unveiled plugins, resources developed by various companies to enhance the capabilities of ChatGPT by allowing the AI to interact with other software and services.

How to get started with plugins

Fast forward a few months, and now there are a rapidly growing variety of ChatGPT plugins. For example, you can quickly create and order ingredients from custom meal plans using the Instacart plugin, or you can access advanced mathematical logic on demand with the Wolfram plugin, and all kinds of things in between.

The good news for us in the cryptoeconomy? New crypto plugins are streaming in left and right. If you’re keen to enhance your own approaches to crypto with the help of AI, then these plugins are “must explore” territory right now.

Here, also keep in mind that you can combine the capabilities of crypto and non-crypto plugins (you can have 3 plugins active per chat stream presently) to achieve more interesting results, like using a graph plugin to visualize data organized by a research plugin, and so on and so forth.

How to start, then? Remember you’ll need a ChatGPT Plus subscription to start playing around with plugins, and this membership will set you back $20 per month.

If you do sign up, you could then go to chat.openai.com and open up a new chat. Proceed here by flicking over to “GPT-4” and then select the “Plugins” option as seen above.

At this point, you can click into the “Plugin store” and start installing as many new plugins as you like. You can use the provided search bar to specifically look for plugins via keywords like “crypto,” “DeFi,” etc.

3 must-try ChatGPT crypto plugins

Once you’re in the plugin store, it’s up to you which plugins to install and experiment with. That said, I’ve curated a few relevant possibilities below to help you get started.

Remember, you can only have 3 plugins active at a time per chat stream, and for every separate chat you’ll need to enable the plugins you want to use at the very start because you can’t change them mid-convo. To try new and different plugin combos you can simply open up new chats, copy prompts over as needed, and start over like that.

Lastly, note that some plugins run into bugs, and some don’t work well period right now, so if you run into any problems try identifying and disabling the problem plugin and explore elsewhere in the meantime!

SignalPlus

Plugin summary: “Live data on crypto, NFTs, DeFi. Spot/derivatives. A must for traders.”

My thoughts: There aren’t a lot of great NFT data plugins yet. And while SignalPlus isn’t just focused on NFTs, in my opinion it’s one of the better plugins available right now for analyzing the data of major NFT collections.

Prompt ideas:

  • Can you compare the number of unique holders that the Cool Cats and Doodles collections currently have?
  • Which collection had more trading volume over the past 24 hours, Mutant Ape Yacht Club or DeGods?

CheckTheChain

Plugin summary: “Look for anything on the blockchain and get instant analysis.”

My thoughts: Developed by lawyer and smart contract programmer Ross Campbell, CheckTheChain is fantastic for getting answers to complex questions about blockchain data that no search engine could answer. For instance, want to find the transaction ID of the 1st transaction sent to the current owner of a specific ENS? This plugin has you covered, and then some.

Prompt ideas:

  • How many transactions has the vitalik.eth address made to date?
  • For the ben.eth address, can you provide me with a summary of its transaction history?

DefiLlama

đź“ťPlay with the prompt above heređź“ť

Plugin summary: “The DefiLlama ChatGPT plugin retrieves current and historical data on blockchains, DeFi applications, and bridges.”

My thoughts: Created by 0xKofi for DefiLlama, this plugin helps you supercharge your DeFi analytics game by letting you quickly dig into all sorts of DeFi protocol stats, from historical TVL changes to recent L2 bridging flows. Better yet, combine this with the “Show Me Diagrams” plugin to start charting out the answers you want visually!

Prompt ideas:

  • Can you provide an overview on on-chain growth across DeFi over the past 24 hours?
  • Which DeFi protocols are generating the most revenue right now?

Zooming out

The ChatGPT plugins scene is very early right now, yet it seems like the possibilities here are already wide open. I kept things light and simple in the crypto examples above, but you can definitely dive into the deep end and try getting more advanced with your prompts and plugin combos. You’ll run into a lot of trial and error as you figure out which phrasings and plugins work best for which purposes, but once you get the hang of a few flows that work for you, your crypto analytics skills will decidedly level up!
