Ethereum Ethereum just turned ten, and in celebration of this milestone, Vitalik Buterin Vitalik Buterin joined Ryan & David on the Bankless podcast to reflect on the past decade of ETH and discuss where the network is headed next.

This nearly two-hour interview is packed with bold predictions, honest reflections, and philosophical insights.

Keep reading for three themes that define Ethereum’s identity and Vitalik’s vision for the decade ahead. 👇

1️⃣ ETH Holds Real Value

Though Vitalik hasn't always been quick to talk about ETH price, Ryan and David seemed pleased to hear Vitalik engaging with lines of questioning around ETH value in their subscriber-only Debrief on the conversation.

For many crypto observers, ETH price is the glue that binds the entire Ethereum ecosystem together. In the interview, Vitalik seemed to acknowledge this, indicating that it is indeed good to see Ethereans rallying around ETH and prioritizing the token as an economic center of Ethereum.

Similarly, when asked about ETH treasury companies, Vitalik said they provide diverse ways for individuals to gain ETH exposure, adding that it is “good and valuable” for companies to coordinate around simply holding the token on their balance sheet as part of their treasuries.

2️⃣ Privacy: Ethereum’s Next Frontier

Decentralization was Ethereum’s first big bet, and privacy may very well be its next. Vitalik dedicated significant time in this episode to laying out an ambitious privacy roadmap that is deeply principled and pragmatic.

From privacy-by-default wallets to scalable non-custodial privacy pools, Vitalik makes it clear that zero-knowledge cryptography is the key for Ethereum to become fully private and fulfill its cypherpunk ideals.

In his vision, privacy is a freedom that should not be limited to purists or pirates, it must be built for the masses. To achieve this, Ethereum must adopt something of a “Bronze Age Mullet,” equipped with vibes in the front and policy in the back, to help it achieve scalable privacy across the technological and cultural layers.

3️⃣ The Ethereum <> L2 Barbell is Working

Despite the 2024 malaise over L2 fragmentation concerns, Vitalik stands by the barbell strategy, claiming it enables the Ethereum L1 to remain lean, credibly neutral, and highly secure while empowering L2s to experiment with scalability, user experience, and alternative block creation processes.

Far from seeing L2s as direct competition or a failure, Vitalik frames them as a functional separation of concerns, where L2s aggressively optimize for performance and service casual user demand while the L1 preserves decentralization and acts as the ultimate source of truth.

Although Vitalik emphasizes the need for faster withdrawals, higher blob space fees, and more ETH-denominated assets, he believes further development of L2s makes Ethereum an increasingly powerful gravitational center for them to continue orbiting.
