Let's Play: Loot Survivor 2
Bankless Author: William Peaster

The Loot NFT collection has inspired dozens of derivative projects, and the most well known of these projects in the onchain gaming scene is Loot Survivor

The original LS1 title was popular on Starknet, so now’s a great time to revisit the series, as indie studio Provable Games recently unveiled Loot Survivor 2—a more advanced and more accessible sequel.

Why It Matters

On the surface, LS2 is a classic RPG dungeon crawler. You explore, fight beasts, level up, collect items inspired by Loot, etc. Yet the game is anything but traditional under the hood.

Built with the Dojo onchain game engine, LS2 runs entirely on Starknet. The crypto UX isn’t clunky, though. Signing in and asset management is handled via Cartridge Controller embedded wallets, which are very easy to use and support session keys (one signature, not many, to play), account abstraction (social logins), and fiat payments.

Plus, there are innovations in the game itself. For example, Death Mountain is the setting for the gameplay, but it’s also a public onchain dungeon system that anyone can customize new RPG experiences with using smart contract calls.

Then there’s also the Embeddable Game Standard, which LS2 debuts. In short, the EGS allows onchain games to be easily embedded into other onchain apps. An early example of this dynamic at work is Provable Games’ Budokan platform, which is running tournaments atop LS2.

Lastly, LS2 has good ol’ fashioned play-to-earn potential. The aforementioned Budokan tournaments are one avenue here, like the currently running “Silky Smooth” contest that has a 5k STRK prize pool.

In LS2 proper, though, you can earn the game’s native SURVIVOR token from questing through Death Mountain dungeons. Just a little over half of this season’s 2.26M SURVIVOR rewards have been earned by players so far, so there’s still a decent chunk left to be claimed.

Another wrinkle here is the bounties on the game’s legendary Wanted Beasts.

There are 3 of these special monsters in total, and while they’re tough to find and take down, they’re worth the effort: Starknet Starknet and Cartridge have put 100k STRK on the line for the 3 players who can conquer these foes. At current prices, that comes out to over $4,000 a pop. Not bad! And none of the Wanted Beasts have been found yet, so they're all still in play.

How to Get Started

If you want to try your hand at LS2, you'll need to set up a Cartridge Controller wallet first if you haven't already.

Fortunately, this onboarding process is super simple. On lootsurvivor.io, click the "Log In" button, enter your desired username, and then select your desired login method (Discord, Google, MetaMask, etc.). That's all it takes! Now you can load your Cartridge wallet with some STRK to pay for transactions.

Before diving in further, though, I recommend brushing up on the battle, exploration, and upgrade mechanics of the game. There's also a "Practice for Free" mode that you can toggle into on the main LS2 page that you can use to get your bearings.

If you want to play for real rewards, you'll want to stay on the "Play for Real" mode. To proceed at this point, you'll need to buy some dungeon tickets in the "Buy Game" tab. These tickets are dynamically priced and can be bought via credit card or with any of the tokens in your Controller wallet.

With this purchase out of the way, you'll immediately enter your first in-game dungeon encounter. If you want to back out and start later, you can return to the "My Games" tab on the LS2 website when you're ready to load back into that playthrough.

Zooming Out

Loot Survivor brings together Loot's IP and onchain gaming tech on Starknet in a really interesting way. And beyond the play-to-earn opportunities, the game is also community-centric. 80% of dungeon ticket proceeds go to SURVIVOR buybacks, which in turn grow the Loot Survivor treasury that is governed by players via SURVIVOR.

Plus, after playing Eternum (which is in the Realms ecosystem alongside Loot Survivor), I've become a big fan of the Cartridge Controller wallet flow. I'd recommend trying it out if you haven't yet, and LS2 is a perfect entry point for doing so. It’s a reminder of how far onchain gaming has come, and where it's headed next!
