In response to the results of an independent review about foreign financial interference in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced a temporary moratorium on crypto donations to political parties.

What's the Scoop?

  • Crypto Ban: According to BBC News, the UK government is banning cryptocurrency donations to the island nation's political parties and establishing a £100k cap on donations from British citizens living abroad as part of an effort to prevent foreign financial interference.
  • Official Recommendations: The crypto prohibition and expat cap on political donations are being implemented as recommended by the Rycroft Review, an independent report commissioned this past December in response to threats posed by foreign states attempting to meddle in British democracy.
  • Further Action: UK ministers are still considering additional Roycroft Review recommendations, including a ban on foreign-funded online political advertisements.
