Tether Tether has launched USA₮, a federally regulated stablecoin issued through Anchorage Digital Bank and designed to operate under the GENIUS Act's framework for the U.S. market.

What's the Scoop?

  • New U.S. Product: USA₮ is a dollar-backed stablecoin purpose-built for U.S. institutions, separate from Tether's global USD₮ product. It is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A., which Tether describes as America's first federally regulated stablecoin issuer.
  • Leadership: Bo Hines, former Executive Director of the White House Crypto Council, serves as CEO of Tether USA₮. The appointment was announced late last year alongside the token's initial design.
  • Reserve Custody: Cantor Fitzgerald is the designated reserve custodian and preferred primary dealer, handling asset management and reserve transparency.
  • Launch Partners: USA₮ is available at launch on Bybit, Crypto.com, Kraken, OKX, and Moonpay, though does not appear to be integrated into DeFi yet.
  • Global Context: Teher notes that USD₮ continues to operate globally and is progressing toward GENIUS Act compliance. Tether is the 17th-largest holder of U.S. Treasuries globally, ahead of Germany, South Korea, and Australia.

Bankless Take:

As you can gauge by the details above, USA₮'s American-aligned nature goes beyond simply being Genesis compliant. First, we have Cantor Fitzgerald, the fund Howard Lucknick, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, ran up until his accepting of his current position, serving as its reserve custodian. Then, we have Bo Hines, the former ED of the White House’s Crypto Council serving as CEO. I stress these details not just to repeat myself but to hammer home that this stablecoin has been strategically designed to have key members of the Trump administration aligned with its success. I expect we'll likely see some major banks close to Trump's immediate circle start supporting and settling via USA₮ quite soon.
