DraftKings (DKNG), a leading online sports gambling platform, announced its acquisition of a CFTC-licensed exchange in support of its push to enter prediction markets through regulated event contracts.

What's the Scoop?

  • Railbird Acquisition: On Tuesday, DraftKings unveiled its acquisition Railbird Technologies Inc. and its subsidiary Railbird Exchange, LLC, a CFTC-regulated exchange. The move marks DraftKings’ official entrance into the prediction market industry, a fast-growing sector that blends traditional betting with event contracts
  • DraftKings App Incoming: As part of the acquisition, DraftKings will roll out DraftKings Predictions, an upcoming mobile app that will allow users to trade regulated event contracts spanning finance, culture, entertainment, and more. The platform will be designed to integrate across multiple exchanges, in the hope of providing access to the broadest suites of prediction markets available.
  • Polymarket Polymarket Integration: Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has announced that his prediction market will serve be a designated clearinghouse for DraftKings' new prediction market efforts.
  • New Partnerships: In other recent news, the National Hockey League (NHL) has announced multiyear licensing agreements with both Polymarket and Kalshi.

Bankless Take:

DraftKings has taken a beating in recent weeks, plummeting over 30% since the start of September. Many commentators have blamed the share price decline on the increasing popularity of prediction markets among sports gamblers, so it comes as little surprise to see DraftKings expanding its footprint in the arena with an enticing product offering designed to aggregate multiple exchanges.
