In preparation for a post-quantum future, the
Bitcoin community has merged BIP 360 – a proposal that would make Bitcoin more resistant to quantum computing threats – into the official BIP GitHub repository.
What's the Scoop?
- New Protosal: According to Bitcoin Magazine, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 360 introduces a new Bitcoin output type called Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), which is designed to support quantum-resistant script tree functionality while maintaining compatibility with existing Tapscript infrastructure.
- Looming Threat: Advances in quantum computing pose a long-term risk to Bitcoin’s current cryptographic schemes, which could theoretically be broken by sufficiently powerful quantum machines. Taproot address and Pay-to-Public-Key (P2PK) outputs are considered more the most at-risk formats.
- Refreshed Model: BIP 360's proposed P2MR output type reduces the surface area for potential attacks and would lay the foundations for later upgrades, like post-quantum signature schemes.
